NEET 2017 – Reality Check in Tamil Nadu

Perhaps TN is the only state in India which does not have entrance tests for the professional courses admission for their students. So when NEET was announced last year TN was among the states which seeked NEET exemption. But SC ruled that NEET has to be followed for Medical admissions with immediate effect and hence we had NEET 1 and NEET 2 confusion last year. That even NEET2 will be difficult for the outgoing students and hence a one time exception sought for the NEET last year and it has to be effected by an ordinance is the last year’s final story. TN benefited from that ordinance and hence temporarily there was a truce.

While the other states who opposed NEET last year, especially states like Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra has been bracing themselves for the NEET 2017, TN was steadfastly saying that it is opposed to NEET and it wants a permanent exemption from NEET. For all its stand, the lobbying, ground work, official representation was very slow and lethargic. Even in NEET 2016, Maharashtra’s aggressive stand only has resulted in the ordinance, surprisingly TN’s opposition has been muted from that time itself.

Meanwhile the central government passed two bills in the parliament providing constitutional status to the NEET

The honorable members of parliament from TN – both from ruling party and opposition didn’t do anything during this time. If they were serious they should have opposed during this stage itself, atleast they should have registered their protest. But they let it pass.

Starting December, the noise on NEET exemption raised, with all the parties joining the chorus, state govt passed a bill in the assembly too on the NEET exemption. Students, parents, schools, educational experts/consultants are not amused – most of them saw it as a political posturing only with nothing happening on the ground to actually exempt NEET for TN. And the sad part is, it has remained that way only – lot of political noises but nothing happened.

The NEET official announcement was made, applications were invited and even the application acceptance has been closed now. It is less than 45 days to NEET exam now and there is very little chance that NEET will be exempted for TN only. Ultimately it is the students only who are the sufferers because of the confused stand taken by the TN govt. and the political parties. We believe that some of the students have not even applied for NEET thinking that there will be an exemption. With very little chance of NEET exemption on the anvil, those students might even loose the opportunity to be considered for the selection.

But the hard fact and the reality is, NEET 2017 is here, TN Medical admission 2017 is going to be based on NEET. Very little chance of escaping from it.
